All's fair this week

The 2011 version of the Trumbull County Fair will have two attractions that have been missing from the annual agriculture exposition.

Exotic animals and live grandstand entertainment are back as feature attractions this year after a multiple year break, joining some old, noisy, greasy, dirty and metal crunching favorites of fair-goers: truck and tractor pulls, car racing and demolition derby.

And new this year is a ceremony to honor residents in Trumbull County awarded the Purple Heart.

Bears, not teddy or gummy, but real, live bears that can weigh up to 1,200 pounds will be performing three times a day for six days starting Wednesday. Times for the performances held east of the grandstand will be announced.

''I like to find something different each year, because people get tired of seeing the same thing,'' said Bud Rodgers, fair board member and entertainment chairman. ''If you bring something different, hopefully that will bring some different people to the fair.''

The last time the fair had exotic animals was about six years ago when it had Bengal tigers as an attraction, Rodgers said.

And also returning this year, after a two-year hiatus, is live entertainment at the grandstand.

Nashville recording artist Michelle Murray will perform 8 p.m. July 4 at the grandstand.

Murray isn't a stranger to these parts - in 2010 she cut a video at the Yankee Lake Inn in Brookfield on Truck Night for her song, ''Love Me Like You Love Your Truck.''

Rodgers said he was there that night and when live entertainment was discussed, her name and others were mentioned, but price became an issue. Rodgers said Murray's manager/husband agreed to a lesser amount to have her perform.

There is no extra fee for fair-goers to attend Murray's performance. Rather it's included in the gate cost.

It was 2008 when another country and western performer, Tracy Lawrence, last provided musical entertainment at the grandstand.

Also new this year is a ceremony to honor Trumbull County residents who have been awarded the Purple Heart.

Thirty-five veterans from World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars, Afghanistan and Iraq will be recognized and presented a quilt, afghan and throw made by local quilters and crafters. The ceremony will be 4 p.m. July 4 at the Bicentennial Stage.

The quilts will be judged in the domestic competition and be displayed through July 3.

Along with the new, there's the tradition favorites.
