Charter school finds home at Yolo fairgrounds
A new charter school now has a place to call home. Woodland Polytechnic Academy is working out the final details of a lease with the Yolo County Fairgrounds in Woodland.
Construction of Woodland Poly is expected to begin in July, with an anticipated opening in the fall of 150 to 175 freshmen, sophomores and juniors, according to a statement from the charter school.
The Yolo County Office of Education approved Woodland Poly’s petition to start a charter school in February.
Woodland Poly will have 10 modular buildings on one acre, according to a statement from the school. Seven buildings will be for classrooms, with three used for administration, a cafeteria and restrooms. The site is centrally located within town, yet nestled within the fairgrounds, between the main exhibition and Waite halls, according to the school.
“We know that parents and students want a safe and convenient campus,” said Steve Marks Jr., Woodland Poly executive director, in a statement. “As founders, it is imperative we choose a site that is also fiscally sound. We have combined both at this location that has rich history with both youth and agriculture.”
Because all fairs have had financial problems following the withdrawal of state funding, fair chief executive officer Rita Moore said she was looking forward to the partnership of “common missions and mutual financial support.”
“The original charge of fairs was to educate youth about agriculture,” Moore said. “For years we have provided 4-H and FFA resources to raise animals and house competitions. We need to work together so we can continue providing top-notch education and support for our kids given the loss of significant funding for both the fair and schools.”
The school is expected to focus on career technical education, but also will prepare students for college. Students will be able to take classes at local community colleges as well as online.

Woodland Poly to locate at Yolo County Fairgrounds
Woodland Polytechnic Academy, a new charter high school, and the Yolo County Fairgrounds are working out the final details of a lease that will make 10 modular buildings a new school site on the fairgrounds.
Construction is expected to begin in July. The new school plans to open this fall, with an initial student body of 150 to 175 freshmen, sophomores and juniors. The site allows for expansion as the student body grows to include freshmen through seniors in the 2012-13 school year.
“We know that parents and students want a safe and convenient campus,” said Steve Marks Jr., Woodland Poly’s executive director. “As founders, it is imperative that we choose a site that is also fiscally sound. We have combined both at this location that has rich history with both youth and agriculture.”
School classrooms will sit between the Main Exhibition and Waite Halls. A bus hub at the County Fair Mall and numerous stops on either side of the fairgrounds will make the school accessible to students coming from all directions.
With financial issues plaguing all fairs since the withdrawal of state funding, fairgrounds CEO Rita Moore says she is looking to this relationship as a marriage of common missions and mutual financial support.
“The original charge of fairs was to educate youth about agriculture,” Moore said. “For years, we have provided 4-H and FFA resources to raise animals and house competitions.
“We need to work together so we can continue providing top-notch education and support for our kids, given the loss of significant funding for both the fair and schools.”
The Woodland Poly board and its contractor are developing plans now to bring seven classrooms and three additional buildings to a 1-acre site at the fairgrounds that will house administration, a cafeteria and restrooms. The grounds already have power, sewer and water connections.
The Yolo County Board of Education approved Woodland Poly’s charter petition in February. The school will focus on providing students multiple educational pathways, including skills needed to move to higher education as well as a technical field.
Enrollment applications are available on the school’s website, http://www.woodlandpoly.org.
