Yacht charter looking to make waves

NEW CASTLE — Steve Briggs is making his "Wildest Dream" come true, and he is ready to share it with anyone who wants to come along for the ride.

Wildest Dream is the name of his 35-foot 2004 Four Winns Vista Cruiser, a yacht he named after an old Moody Blues tune. The boat is now docked at the Wentworth by the Sea Marina's D Dock and it is the key component of a business Briggs is bringing to the Seacoast.

This is Briggs' fourth year running his pleasure cruise business, called Vista Yacht Charters. The former Lynnfield, Mass., resident used to run the cruises out of the Seaport Landing Marina in Lynn and at the Boston Harbor Marina.

Briggs, 60, said he and his wife, Mary — his "primary first mate" — have always felt pulled to Seacoast New Hampshire and decided to move to New Castle in January. But his love of boating dates back to 1972, when his father-in-law bought a cottage on Baxter Lake in Farmington.

Briggs graduated from the 14-foot lake boat on Baxter Lake to bigger and more impressive vessels over time. The Wildest Dream boasts twin V-8 inboard motors, air conditioned interior, stereo, television, kitchen, beds, two refrigerators and a bathroom with shower.

The boat sleeps up to six, though Briggs is not offering overnight trips. What he does offer is a variety of luxury excursions to The Isles of Shoals, Portsmouth Harbor and up the Piscataqua River. He also does coastal excursions all the way from Hampton to Kennebunkport, Maine.

Briggs said the cruises are ideal for special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays. He has also done ceremonies of ashes for burials at sea and whale watching tours.

He said the Wildest Dream is the perfect place to go simply to relieve stress and feel the calm lapping of the waves. "It was always that, even before the business," he said.

Soft drinks and snacks are provided on the cruises; gluten-free snacks are available. Briggs said guests may bring their own beer or wine. He is in talks with local businesses and already has an agreement for the Serenity Cafe in Rye to provide sandwiches.

Prices start at $300 for a two-hour cruise. Wildest Dream accommodates six passengers. Times are flexible, as are cancellations, Briggs said.

Keeping in mind, you get what you pay for I would recommend a Boston Whaler sport 17 or Newport 17. They are a bit pricey but low on maintenence and last forever. They also hold their resale like no other boat. Good motors are made by Evinrude, Mercury and Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki. Steer clear of Force branded motors, they are old design (60′s era ) outboards that have terrible reliability and no value.
