RCMP officer and beekeeper saves city condo from swarm
“Oh my gosh, I had gone to take some garbage out, and all I could hear was buzzing,” said Lee-Ann Erickson, the woman who notified police. “The bees were hovering right down to the ground, and they went for about four or five car-widths. They were hovering all around the cars, so you couldn’t even get into the cars.”
Ms. Erickson, a Victoria resident who was in town visiting her daughter and granddaughter, said she raced inside and Googled something like, “who do you call for a bee swarm, Kelowna, B.C.” The search engine directed her to the RCMP.
Constable Kevin Hamilton has been a Mountie for about a decade, the force said. But when he’s not on duty, he’s an active apiarist, or beekeeper. Constable Hamilton once told the department that if a call about bees came in, he’d gladly take care of it. Wednesday was his first chance to shine.
Constable Hamilton, who police said was not available for interviews, went home to change and grab his equipment. Armed with a hive box, hand pruner and a smoker, he arrived at the scene and spied the hive in a tree.
“It was the size of a gigantic watermelon,” Ms. Erickson said.
Constable Hamilton calmed the bees down by spraying them with a few puffs of smoke. Once the bees were docile, he gently shook the branch, and most of the insects fell into a waiting box. The officer then cut the branches to ensure any hangers-on also fell in.
He waited a couple of minutes to see if the bees would try to fly away, a surefire sign the queen was not in the box. The bees remained. Constable Hamilton then transported the insects to their new home in an orchard in a rural area.
RCMP spokesman Constable Steve Holmes said it’s the first time he’s ever heard of the force receiving a call about honeybees. He said two to three thousand insects were in the swarm. Some colonies can have 10,000 or more.
Ms. Erickson said she came forward with her story to try to spread the word about the fine work the RCMP does. Mounties in this province have received negative press in several high-profile cases in recent years.
