Julia Ormond Negotiating to Play Superman's Mom in 'Man of Steel'
Like so many adopted children, Superman was orphaned when his parents put him in a rocket and sent him to Earth in advance of their home planet's destruction. In Zack Snyder 's Superman reboot Man of Steel , British actor Henry Cavill plays Clark Kent, who was born Kal-El of Krypton. Last week, Russell Crowe was revealed as the choice to play Jor-El, Clark's Kryptonian progenitor , and though rumors at the time suggested that Connie Nielson has been offered the role of Kal-El's mother, Deadline reports today that Julia Ormond is in talks to play Lara.
The British-born Ormond starred in Legends of the Fall and First Knight in the mid-1990's, and more recently appeared in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Conspiracy , and Temple Grandin . In the last few years, she also had multiple-episode arcs on CSI: NY, Nurse Jackie, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent .
Last Wednesday, a Production Weekly report posted on facebook claimed that Gladiator actress Connie Nielsen had been offered the part, with an unspecified role also out to The Matrix Reloaded 's Harry Lennix . It's unknown whether Nielson was, in fact, in contention to play Lara if that report was simply bunk. Either way, Mike Fleming at Deadline says that Ormond's deal should come together quickly.
The character of Lara Lor-Van was played in Richard Donner 's definitive 1978 film by Susannah York , with Marlon Brando bringing Jor-El to life and earning giant stacks of cash for doing so. Like York, Ormond has a beauty and poise that should convey the regal dignity of Superman's species.
Ormond joins Crowe in playing Superman's birth parents, while his adopted Earthing parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, will be portrayed by Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. Amy Adams rounds out the cast of human characters, playing Lois Lane, with Antje Traue and Michael Shannon as Kryptonian villains Faora and General Zod. The reboot, written by Batman Begins scribe David Goyer from a story he developed with producer Christopher Nolan , is set to begin shooting later this summer under the direction of Zack Snyder .

Real life inspiration There's a section of Sequart's Grant Morrison documentary, Talking with Gods, in which Morrison and Mark Waid tell the story (so it's corroborated) of how All-Star Superman was born. It seems they both saw this guy dressed as Superman walk by and sit on a small hill to watch the trains go by. Not some fat cosplayer either. The guy looked the part. And when they approached him, he looked back, calm and relaxed, just like on the cover of All-Star Superman #1. He also interviewed him about Lex and Lois and Batman, and the mysterious guy thoughtfully answered every question. We don't know how much of what he said actually found itself in the book, but his attitude is definitely in there. What a strange story.
