City warned that annual event endangered

Dogs and gopher holes do not mix.

Restaurant owner Steve Byork warned the city council Tuesday night that the city risks losing the annual dog show - which provides a huge boost to the local economy - if nothing is done to remove noise.

A dog was injured stepping in a hole and withdrew from the program, said the board Byork.He said a dog-show judge told him that dogs and their masters were "stumbling around."

Pete DeSoto, President of the Club of Lompoc Valley Kennel, said the park was riddled with gopher holes as he "went around to put plastic bottles in the holes for the butcher."

Although the holes are dangerous for dogs and their masters, DeSoto said he had heard no complaints about the marmots judges or dog handlers.

"They were struggling with a foot and they were cautious. I do not think they complain. The complaint comes from me, "said DeSoto."If they can solve some of these issues next year, I think everyone will be happy."

Four performances were held at the dog park every July - two specialties greyhound, which are sponsored by the Western Sighthound Combined Specialties - the unique spectacle of its kind in the United States - and two All-Breed shows, which are sponsored by Valley Lompoc Kennel Club.

DeSoto said the economic impact of the event spread beyond the city throughout the central coast.

"We must become more aggressive," said Councillor Bob Lingl Tuesday night. "If we lose a dog show, which is one of the biggest events of the year."

Byork, who owns Uptown Cafe Sissy said even a progressive loss of participants could potentially compromise the exposure and harm the local economy.

"Many people put that on their calendar at the end of July. I think we need to fix Ryon Park, "he said.

"All you need is to get rid of gophers," said Byork. "I really think it would be wrong to ignore it."

The city has ignored its problems gopher, it was trying to control groundhogs for years, according to Urban Forester Cindy McCall.

Despite a program to reduce aggressive, McCall said Wednesday, the city has been unable to eradicate gophers.

"Our climate is perfect for them. They are aggressive little creatures. They multiply very quickly, is the biggest problem, "said McCall." Our parks have everything they want: to chew grass, plenty of water, beautiful soft ground to dig in.
