At the Living History camp there will be displays of musket ball casting, drill practice, calligraphy, 17th Century camp cooking and games. Individual re-enactors will attend the Heritage Centre to explain their uniforms and life during the Civil War. The annual Diseworth Scarecrow Festival will this year feature Civil War and Living History demonstrations, exhibitions and activities throughout the weekend of 18th and 19th June in aid of St. Michael & All Angels Parish Church.

The American Civil War occurred during a revolution in the design of large caliber naval artillery. By 1861, the United States Navy was already several years into rearming itself with new guns. Solid shot was giving way to explosive shells with reliable fuses. New casting methods and gun designs made it possible to dramatically increase the size of naval cannon. Rifling and wrought iron were making it possible to fabricate large rifled artillery that was more accurate and could fire at longer ranges. At the same time, the American Civil War was a war of improvisation in which the navies involved fought with a variety of leftover antiques from earlier wars. Cast iron cannon were sturdy things and when an older gun was replaced by a newer weapon, the older guns had gone into storage in the nation's navy yards--the Confederacy had captured many of these older weapons at Pensacola and Norfolk's naval yards. Anyone who reads any history of the navies in the Civil War is likely to encounter the 32-pounder cannon. Despite the fact that the 32-pounder was well on its way to being obsolete in 1861, it was still one of the most commonly used heavy cannon of the war, and there is a good reason for this. In the early 1840s the ordnance officers of the U.S. Navy had an inspiration. Prior to this time American warships had carried a variety of weapons of different sizes. The navy's largest vessels, three decker ships-of the-line, had carried as many as four different calibers of gun. The largest and heaviest cannon--32-pounders--were carried on the lowest decks of warships. The size of gun decreased the higher in the ship you went, 24-pounders and then lighter 12-pounders on the highest deck. The inspiration that the navy's officers had in the 1840s was to make every gun on navy ships a 32-pounder. What these officers realized was that you could use different sized guns to fire the same projectile: a cast iron 32-pound solid shot. Instead of varying the size of shot, these officers realized that a lighter powder charge could be used throw the same projectile from a lighter, shorter gun. The shot would not travel as far or with as much force, but ships would no longer have to carry two or three or even four different sizes of solid shot. Because all guns would now be 32-pounders, the navy needed a new nomenclature to describe the different types of 32-pounders. Caliber was unhelpful since all these guns were 6.4" guns: the diameter of a 32-pounder solid shot.
