Plane Engine Safety Records Examined After Mid-Air Issues
SAN DIEGO -- The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating two incidents on the same day that involved airplanes with San Diego in their flight plans making emergency landings. On Sunday, engines on two commercial airliners with San Diego in their flight plans had mid-air problems. One was on its way to San Diego from Houston and the other plane was leaving San Diego bound for Los Cabos, Mexico. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating both incidents. Fred George, who has been flying for 45 years, told 10News, "It is a coincidence but that doesn't reassure a nervous traveling public." "It feels very frightening to see two engines on the same sorts of airplanes fail in very, very close timing," George added. The engines are from the CFM class and are made by General Electric. The same type of engine powers nearly every 737 airplane in the sky and do not fail often. However, in Dallas, a CFM engine exploded in mid-flight. "The perception is terror, but the reality is a lot of safety," said George. The CFM's engine housing is built to contain an explosion so it does not damage the plane. Commercial planes can fly with only one working engine. According to the engines' manufacturer, more than 20,000 CFM engines have safely powered more than 9,000 airplanes for more than 500 million hours of flight.
