Chivalry is not dead for group of actors
FARMINGTON — Anachronism. What's that you ask? Well, the dictionary lists it as a noun: Something or someone that is not in its correct historical or chronological time, especially a thing or person that belongs to an earlier time. The sword is an anachronism in modern warfare.To a group of overzealous knights, sirs and ladies, it's a way of life.
The Society For Creative Anachronism is a world of chivalry, art, and camaraderie — a world shared by more than 100,000 people with the same passion for preserving history and reenacting the past.
The local group spoke to an audience of children Thursday at the Farmington Public Library as part of its summer reading program.
"These special presentations are so great for the kids because they allow them to explore the world around them," Youth Services Librarian Barbara Huff said. "After each presentation, the books about the subject fly off the shelves here. It's good to see the kids interested."
The library aims to provide a different event once a week during the summer reading program, and each presentation carries a similar theme, which this year is "One World, Many Stories."
The group gave demonstrations on fencing, heavy weapons, even cross bow shooting. Children visiting the library got a first-hand look at what fighting was like in the Middle Ages.
Sir Michael and Baron Angus gave several courageous audience members a chance to sword fight with them.
"What we do is fun," Lady Deronique said. "Some people like to watch football or basketball. We like to re-enact history, just like those who participate in Civil War re-enactment. What we do is teach others about a period in history and have fun while doing so."
Most people can relate anachronism to the characters in costume at Renaissance Faires and other events surrounding the Middle Ages.
Those in costumes are the ones taking a hands-on approach to history, exploring and engaging in the culture, arts and sciences of ages past.
The society was incorporated in 1968 as a not-for-profit educational organization.
A group of activists participate in the society's activities here in Farmington.
"We live it. We talk about it. We love it," said Lady Deronique. "There's values to be learned and to be taught. We instill a sense of respect into every action we take."
There are several younger members in the group.
"We encourage the younger ones to become involved," Lady Deronique said.
