Man escapes Walton work detail
MONROE — A man walked away from his work detail in Walton County on Friday, prompting a two-count search.
Ricky Carroll Mathis Jr., 23, was on work detail Friday afternoon at the Georgia State Patrol post on Highway 11 Southwest between Monroe and Social Circle.
Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman said Mathis had been jailed on a probation violation. Chapman said prisoners often do work for the city of Monroe, Walton County or the State Patrol.
Walton County deputies arrested Mathis at the Oconee County jail on April 15. He was being held without bail in the Walton County Jail at the time of his escape.
Oconee County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Lee Weems told the Athens Banner-Herald that Mathis was arrested April 12 on charges of aggravated battery, battery, third-degree cruelty to children and second-degree property damage.
Officials in Oconee County said Mathis was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and black-and-white-striped pants. The Oconee County Sheriff's Office was alerting residents there to be on the lookout for Mathis since he lives on Monroe Highway in Bogart.
