Consider this a crash course in gynecology visit persuasion with a side of tips. What’s my expertise on the matter? I’ve had more than my share of gyno appointments in the past two years than most people have in five.
You may have heard that it’s sooo uncomfortable and a complete violation. Why not prolong something like that for as long as you can, right? Well, if you’re sexually active or are considering becoming sexually active, seeing a gyno can be a life-saver. Plus, it’s just a part of life – whether you’re already an adult or an almost-legal lady.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m a complete hypocrite when it comes to this. I waited until I was 20 years old to go, long after I became sexually active. Because there’s no great segway for this, I’ll just say it: my first pap smear during my first ever gyno visit came back abnormal. Many abnormalities are attributed to being HPV positive, a type of sexually transmitted disease or to underdeveloped cells.
Well, I wasn’t HPV positive. I still remember the look in my mom’s face later that day when I reiterated what the doctor had told me. I can’t really describe just how scared I felt in that moment. Any cliché that epitomizes feeling alone and confused would suffice.
The next procedural step was to undergo a colposcopy to identify if any of the abnormal cells were cancerous. Because of too many extraneous circumstances to mention, the actual testing and results would take months to complete.
That summer I was working at a local daily paper and covering a cancer survivor series for an upcoming Walk for the Cure. While listening to these women made it nearly impossible for me to do my job without bursting into tears, I found strength and inspiration in passing on their stories. These were strong, unbelievably positive, amazing individuals, who, unlike me, had done nothing to deserve what they had been through. Through them I came to accept my situation, regardless of the outcome. My results came back shortly after.
Everything was benign. (Insert HUGE sigh of relief.) To this day, as I reflect back on that whole ordeal, my only regret was that I let it get to that point where I felt I only had myself to blame.
