Four years the since floods - and what's happened?

It was four years ago last week that wild weather and floodwater ripped the heart out of many areas of the city – June 8, 2007 to be exact.

Abermain, Weston and South Cessnock were the worst hit with a huge number of homes flooded and residents having to be evacuated. Branxton was also cut off and Wollombi suffered major flooding.

It was a time of terror and heartbreak with emergency services stretched to the limit and residents wanting to know what went wrong.

The Advertiser gave an extensive coverage of the tragedy and how people were traumatised and left wondering what the future held. There was a huge loss of property as the floodwaters filled their homes.

Last week The Advertiser contacted Cr. Jeff Maybury, a councillor for the Abermain-Weston area and asked what has happened over the four years to remedy the situation.

“Basically nothing,” was his reply.

He said to the best of his knowledge there has been some clearing of growth in Swamp Creek and towards the Kline Street Bridge, but as far as he knows nothing has been done in the area of the Fourth Street Bridge.

Referring to Abermain, in the Old School Hill area, he said there is little to no improvements in conditions there that caused the flooding.

Cr. Maybury said he will be asking the question at tonight’s Cessnock City Council meeting about what has been done over the past four years to lessen the risk of flooding in all these area.

He said people living in areas that flooded in June 2007 would have been on edge, fearing the worse again.

He understands there has been a more extensive study carried out by a group tasked with the job of finding answers, but that it was still in the draft stages and as such he is unaware of its contents.

The Advertiser spoke to South Cessnock couple Alec and Elsie Orr who were among up to 50 people evacuated from that part of town that night.

Both were assisted through waist deep water about 9pm when their home on the corner of Gordon Avenue and Oliver Street was flooded. Mrs. Orr said they were terrified a week ago when heavy rain was falling.

And, according to them, no work has taken place to reduce conditions in the vicinity that would prevent a further emergency.

Since the 2007 floods, Kurri Landcare has installed alarms that would alert residents to rising floodwater at William Street, Abermain and at the Fourth Street Bridge, Weston.
