Hospital not dead, Bamberg officials insist
BAMBERG - Bamberg County officials are in discussions with the Regional Medical Center, the Bamberg Hospital Board chairman confirmed Friday.
Dr. Danette McAlhaney, however, declined to discuss the nature of the talks with RMC officials.
Richard Ness, attorney for Bamberg County Council, announced Thursday night that the partnership between Bamberg, Barnwell and Allendalie counties to create a regional healthcare system and eventually build an acute-care regional hospital was over.
"The multi-county consortium has ended," Ness said during the special called meeting of Bamberg County Council and the Bamberg County Hospital Board of Trustees.
In the wake of that announcement, county officials say salvaging the Bamberg hospital is a critical priority.
The Tri-County Regional Health System, which would have required a total capital investment of $80 million, was seen as key to saving the financially strapped hospitals in Bamberg, Barnwell and Allendale counties.
Officials had said the project ultimately would lead to construction of a 70- to 80-bed acute care regional hospital serving the three counties.
Allendale County pulled out of the deal last week. Then came Thursday's dramatic announcement that the regional partnership was dead.
New York City-based Health Care Management Partners LLC was hired to manage the three hospitals. McAlhaney said Friday that while HMP remains Bamberg Hospital's manager, the board is in negotiations with another entity. She would not reveal who that entity is.
As for the Regional Medical Center, McAlhaney said, "We're not asking them to provide any services or anything at this time, but we have spoken with them. I think that's really all I can say about that at this time. They're not doing any management or anything like that for us right now."
"HMP is managing us, but ... the tri-county concept is over. The entity that the county is currently in negotiations with is only negotiating with Bamberg County and with Bamberg County Hospital," McAlhaney said.
Asked about the Regional Medical Center's talks with Bamberg hospital and County Council officials, RMC President Tom Dandridge said, "In cases like this, if there were discussions happening, the discussions are very general. There is really not much to report."
McAlhaney called the failure of the tri-county hospital initiative "disappointing."
"They had all along said that there needed to be a three-county deal, and then they looked at it as a two-county deal. But when they looked at it as a two-county deal, the counties and the company just couldn't come up with an agreement that was suitable to all entities," she said.
