PAWS' new dog shelter opens today
Thursday was a day for the dogs.
Pueblo Animal Welfare and Protection Society moved 24 dogs to recently completed state-of-the-art PAWS for Life building on the city's West Side.
The 15,000 square-feet shelter cost $1.7 million and primarily was funded from the estate of former Pueblo teacher Shirley McGill. It was built with plans in place to add an additional 10,000 square-feet.
PAWS has scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for July 23. The event will have activities for kids, free hot dogs and soda, tours and an opportunity to adopt a four-legged friend.
Though the grand opening is nearly a month away, the new complex will be open for business at 10 a.m. today. Its staff expects an influx of people hoping to "check out" the new shelter.
"This is phase one," said Chris Comins, shelter director and a PAWS board member.
Comins has been a PAWS volunteer for more than 13 years. After retiring as a teacher she still had a zeal to give back to her community. She joined the PAWS pack because she's "always been an animal lover and understands the plight of dogs and cats."
"Essentially this new facility allows all dogs to have indoor kennel runs," she said.
The old facility, located next door to the new shelter, typically holds around 45 dogs. Some of the dogs had kennel runs outdoors and were subject to the elements.
PAWS will keep both complexes in operation, which will allow about 60 dogs to be kept.
Comins said the old complex will be used as an intake facility and the new complex will be an adoption center. Whether the dogs are in the new or old shelter, they no longer have to face the unpleasant elements, Comins said.
Also gone will be the dog days of summer. The new facility is equipped with air-conditioning, geothermal heating, a courtyard that allows fresh air, play areas donated by Dave Cooley and solar panels to help power the building.
"The courtyard allows good quality air, the feel of the outdoors and helps the dogs not to get too excited by the sight of each other," Comins said.
PAWS is a no-kill shelter and strives to have their dogs adopted. Approximately 400 dogs were adopted last year, according to Comins.
"All dogs have been spayed or neutered, have the necessary shots and are healthy," she said.
Prices for adoption range from $50 to $100 dollars depending on the age of the dog.

Those making a $100 donation get the opportunity to create a tile with a paw print or picture of a pet. The tiles will be placed in the primary hallway that leads to the kennel area, and donors can choose to put their money toward a specific fund.

Dog themed cookies were the party favor. I went the easy route and used pre-made cookie dough so all I had to do was cut them out and bake them. I made sugar, peanut butter, and chocolate chip cookies. I put 2 cookies in each bag, tied it with a paw print ribbon, and attached a wallet sized photo of Drake and Skinner that said “Thanks for making my Pawty Pawfect”. People loved the favors and they were so easy to make!
