Tranforming an old school house was home-work for architect couple
The first time I came across architect Russell Bridge was when he and his boss, Roger Stephenson, redesigned a 1970s estate house to show what a trained eye can achieve.
It was a masterpiece in simplicity giving a total new look and layout without too much upheaval.
It was a paper exercise only, done for M.E.N Homes, so never got to fruition, unlike many of the firm’s high profile projects like Chethams’ new school of music and, just as importantly, Russell’s own home.
He and partner Bernadette, also an architect, have an ambition to build their own home but, while searching fruitlessly for a plot, came across the former Christchurch School in Littlemoss, a quaint little backwater just outside Droylsden.
Russell said: “We loved the area and could see the potential of the building, perhaps when no one else could. We liked its scale and its history and knew what could be achieved.
“Bernadette is a conservation architect and we loved the idea of something built in the 1860s redesigned for modern living.”
The couple took the building back to its four walls and oak frame roof with its three feature Queen post trusses and started from scratch.
Russell explained: “While the exterior was preserved we wanted to make it as contemporary inside as we could. If you are going to do something in 2010 then it should reflect that era, not be a copy of a previous age.”
So the living area is one big open space under its vaulted ceiling with areas cleverly demarked by careful positioning of furniture and lighting.
Solid oak flooring runs the length of the space and the sleek kitchen mixes white high gloss contrasting with the rough, exposed brick and a wall of custom made Wenge units.
The large kitchen incorporates a built-in fridge, freezer, washing machine and dishwasher, together with triple undermounted sinks and a large corian-clad island unit.
At the other end of the room the sitting area is grouped around specially-built storage, and French doors lead out into the garden.
Off the main entrance area are two bedrooms, one the domain of twins Amelia and Jessica and the other currently fitted out as a study. There is also a contemporary house bathroom.
The master bedroom with its feature gothic window is on the first floor and has acres of built-in storage as well as an en-suite shower room.
It’s an inspired transformation of an old school house that gives you all the glory of an old building while still being a fun and practical family home.

There are times when I kind of miss the old school layouts. They were fun and cute back then, and I think they're still fun and cute now.
The only thing I do NOT miss are my early scrapping pages plastered with sticker sneeze! Thanks Shana!
And damn Scrapn Nana--who totally ROCKED the deco scissors??!! It takes a lot of time and patience to get a nice even border like that. Awesome!

A few years ago, I did an ABC paper doll book. I spent around 55-60 hours total on it and did one doll for each letter. A few of the ones here are in the book like the vet, fisherman, Dora, and most of the others I think but not all the Disney princesses.
