Softball tournament turns to turbo fans to battle heat

Monday was the first time he can remember seeing turbo misters and fans placed in any dugout.

He was glad it was his team's dugout.

"We have a couple of dads who farm and they brought along a spray and a turbo fan, things they use for their livestock," said Colt, who saw his team beat 3-2 Earlham in 10 rounds to open a Class 1A action.

The day featured an index hit that exceeded 110 degrees. It prompted officials with the Iowa Girls Athletic Union to allow multiple breaks for players. Stan Wisnieski of Sioux City replaced the starting home plate umpire in the fifth inning of the Akron-Westfield contest because of the extreme heat. It was the third umpire replaced during a game due to the heat on Monday.

"Today (Tuesday), they're putting misters in every dugout," Colt said. "Iowa Central Community College is providing the misters. We've never had them before at the state tournament."

The forecast calls for intense heat to continue this week. The state has licensed medical staffers posted on each diamond to watch for players, fans, umpires and coaches who may suffer from heat exhaustion.

Even before the heat index rose to a top of 116 degrees this week, staff members at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa, had treated patients for heat exhaustion.

So did most Siouxland hospitals.

It promoted Mary Jo Clark, the ER/trauma coordinator at Floyd Valley Hospital, to share the warning signs people should watch for this week and beyond.

"Before you get heat stroke, you get heat exhaustion," Clark said. "If you're dizzy, tired and have a headache, muscle cramps and an intense thirst -- any of these symptoms -- you need to get inside to air conditioning. You need to put cool cloths on your head, drink lots of fluids and lay down and rest."

Power drinks such as Gatorade, water and juice help replenish the system. Alcohol and sodas with caffeine contain diuretics, which pull fluids from your system. Those drinks are not advised.

"Our recommendation is that if you work outside or you go outside the pool or on a picnic, you need to drink before you go and then eat half a cup of fluid every 15 minutes, you're out" said Clark.

Heat exhaustion is a warning sign for more serious heat stroke. According to Clark, heat stroke is reached when the body temperature of a person rises above 101 degrees.

I have EAD, AP and FP done.The problem is that I don't remember seing the I-140 application among the papers we had to sign, and nothing just for my husband to sign, which would be normal, since he's the primary applicant. The Supervisor called him once they got the info in their system and also gave him the number. The actual card came after few days in mail. I would suggest you to contact the local SSA office Super/Admin and escalate your case saying you badly need the number to start working.
