Car battery damage in heat
People aren't the only ones suffering from the current heat. It also takes a toll on car batteries.
Despite common belief, while the cold season of the year puts the most stress on car batteries, the boiling summer temperatures are the actual cause for most of the damage, said Shane Stafford, manager at Action Battery Center.
With temperatures being able to reach 175 to 200 degrees under the hood of a vehicle, the corrosion factor within a battery is affected.
Stafford said usually it is the internal part of the battery that is affected, with plates on the inside breaking down.
He said it is important to maintain batteries in good condition and check for corrosion on the outside of the battery.
Stafford advises to check the water containers in the battery and refill if they're low, because in the summer "the water evaporates faster."
In some cases the battery can get so hot internally there is a possibility of an internal battery explosion. Stafford said it's an extreme case and only happens on rare occasions.
He said usually the battery won't have trouble when the car is moving — it's more likely the car simply won't start.
A sulfur smell is a sign acid is leaking out of the battery and can indicate that the battery is starting to wear out.
"If it smells like rotten eggs, you need to take it somewhere right away," he said.

I called the water guy and he said the softener removed the calcium that screws up the soaping and rinse ability and replaced it with sodium or potassium depending on which salt you use. You feel the difference even though the water actually has more PPM. That's why soft water and RO water need calcium and magnesium supplements for flowering, or so I am told.
