Truck Hits Police SUV During Traffic Stop, Injures Two
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WUSA) -- An Anne Arundel County Police officer and another man were injured after being struck during a traffic stop in Glen Burnie Friday night.
Officials tell 9 NEWS NOW several plain clothes detectives in an unmarked Dodge Durango witnessed a traffic violation which led to a traffic stop on Baltimore Annapolis Blvd near Castle Harbour Way around 11:00 p.m. All of the detectives got out of the vehicle after parking the Durango with lights flashing behind the violator's 2006 Pontiac G6 partially on the shoulder of the road.
After the occupants were ordered out of the pulled-over car, a 1989 GMC Pickup truck struck the rear of the Durango, which caused the SUV to jolt forward several feet, striking one of the occupants of the Pontiac who had been standing between the car and the detective's SUV. Sergeant Keith Clark was also injured when he dove into the Pontiac to avoid being hit by the truck.
James Earl Spears, a 26-year-old from Lisman, Alabama, was taken to Baltimore Shock Trauma Center where he is listed in critical condition. Officials say Spears is stable. Sgt. Clark and the driver of the striking pickup were taken by ambulance to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor, non-life-threatening injuries.
Right now investigators are uncertain whether or not drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
