Cuddyer: Music makes the game sing
Are a few that come to mind. There is one thing, however, that is in the fabric of the game as much as hits and outs – one thing that has been involved with baseball since the beginning: music. Now, music in relation to baseball has definitely changed over time, and the purpose of that music has changed, too. But make no mistake, without music the sport never would be the same. It wouldn't be the same coming to the ballpark and not hearing the national anthem or "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." It wouldn't be the same taking batting practice in complete silence or getting ready for a game in the clubhouse with no noise at all. And God forbid if there would be no walk-up-to-the-plate songs or songs that got the crowd fired up when the closer came in the game! No matter what the song or the genre, music is needed in baseball.
I remember when I was really little, my mom and dad teaching me the words to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." I used to sing that song all of the time. I would sing it to whomever would listen, and now my 3-year-old son is the same way.
The first time I ever got to sing it at a major league game was when I was 8 years old at old Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. The Orioles were playing the Kansas City Royals. I remember hearing the organ playing between pitches and dancing between innings to whatever song was on. To this day, I get a kick out of watching the stadium jumbo screens and seeing all the fans dance on camera and the kids have such a good time with the music that is played throughout the course of the game.
When the seventh-inning stretch came that night in Baltimore, though, I belted it. It was the highlight of the night for me. I am sure I lost my voice during that 1½-minute song, but it was about six years of waiting coming out in those vocal cords. I was so pumped to be able to sing baseball's anthem at a real baseball game. Little did I know that music and baseball would be linked in ways I never would have imagined.
Growing up in Pony League baseball and in high school, we never took batting practice. I never knew what it was like to be able to get some swings in on the field before the game. So it should come to no one's surprise that I didn't listen to much music before a game.
My first taste of batting practice came in my first year of pro ball. Along with it came my first taste of BP music. It may sound funny, but at first I couldn't take it.

One track that definitely did stand out is Barbra Streisand by Duck Sauce, only because I recognise the name and the sample comes from a sing-along 1970s tune, Gotta Go Home, by Boney M. For me, this is an album for a club, as it's intended.

I think people need stuff they can sing along to, but I also want to be introduced to things I can't hear elsewhere. It does make it tough, and one thing the format has in common with all radio stations is there's just more competition everywhere you

I had my portable CD players, and I have my iPod, but mostly I listen to my music via speakers. Maybe it is because I am deaf in my left ear and it doesn't balance out right; I don't know. What I do know is that I don't wear headphones very often to

Johnson closed out his set with an audience sing-along of "In Color." A group of women near me were falling over each other singing the line "You should've seen it in color" at the top of their lungs. While Nelson's set later in the night was the real

As much as I was not a girly-girl growing up (or ever), I was a big fan of Barbie as a kid and my daughter is quickly following in my footsteps. She notices all the Barbie themed toys and dolls at the store and is constantly asking for one.
With summer coming, we’re all trying to promote activity and creativity with our kids, especially when school lets out. As the weather warms up, or we take vacations and travel, there are a lot of great Barbie toys that can lend themselves to helping girls get and stay active, keeping them entertained and keeping their imaginations plugging along at full force even when school is out.
Barbie bikes (or Hot Wheels bikes for the little man in your family) let them ride around the neighborhood while they burn off energy and stay active. But there is also a full line of Barbie electronics for outdoor and indoor fun. Because let’s face it, we can’t be outside all the time. Inclement weather and other things sometimes leaves kids stuck in the house, even in the summer. Sometimes too, they get tired of bike riding or running around and there are other opportunities to explore, learn and have fun outdoors with products such as a Barbie themed digital camera, video camera, a sing-along CD player and even more. They can stage plays and record them, photograph nature, or put on their very own concert!
And Toys R Us is the perfect place to shop because next week they have some very special deals going on from Mattel. Check them out:
