Board continues to oppose station

The Dallas School District will continue to “raise objections if needed” at zoning hearings for Chief Gathering LLC’s application to build a metering station about 1,300 feet from the four district schools, said the district’s attorney for the hearings at Monday night’s work session.

Concerned parents and taxpayers attended the Dallas School Board work session to confirm the board’s position on a natural gas metering station planned for an area near the school district campus.

Kim Jacobs, a resident and member of the Dallas Parents-Taxpayers Group, expressed concerns about natural gas companies’ intentions for the area.

She said the Hildebrandt Road location where two natural gas companies are planning metering facilities and pipeline tap-ins is “so strategic” for the companies, despite the fact they have stated in the past that metering facilities “do not need to be at the Hildbrandt Road location, but it is financially best for them.”

Jacobs added it would cost about $50 million for the companies to relocate equipment to keep children and employees safe, and maintained the companies have a “moral and ethical responsibility” to do so.

“Our children are worth so much more than that,” she said to the board. “Please do not put a price tag on them.”

An agreement proposed between Chief and the school board was presented at last month’s meeting and stated the flammable odorant mercaptan would be removed from the planned location if both parties followed the stipulations of the agreement.

Jack Dean of Elliot, Greenleaf and Dean, the district’s attorney throughout the zoning hearings, said he was approached by Chief attorneys on the agreement, but the board did not agree to the terms.

Solicitor Benjamin Jones III said there were “so many questions unanswered” about the agreement and site plans for the metering station that the board could not agree to any terms.

Dean also said, in addition to removal of mercaptan, Chief will eliminate a 100-foot communications tower from the plans. He said what will be left on the site is a metering facility and a biodegradable glycol container, which he said the board will continue to investigate.

• The board received a construction update from Bob Nesbit of Crabtree Rohrbaugh & Associates on the new high school construction project. He said demolition has begun on the former high school and the new building is “virtually finished.

We started to do this in, approximately, 2007, starting to build up T-City Friedrichshafen where we’ve faced, at that time, quite some specific problems that we were forced to build a specific solution to. T-City is a corporation with the City of Friedrichshafen, in Germany and Bavaria where Deutsche Telekom has partnered with the municipality in order to invest elaborate new technology, among others, IPTV. Since 2007, T-City has been utilized for implementing smart metering, smart grid, and general smart technology service. We, as T-Systems, have been building a smart metering platform, multi-utility, and sub-metering, and cooperative; and grown these into little smart grid applications, where we’ve basically implemented demand-response requirements with partners, which are power plant requirements; done some economical research on feasibilities and market values of applying smart metering or smart grid or demand-response overture power plants in the German market. It is basically a laboratory where we are taking the technology that we developed and make proof of concepts, evaluate it in real-life condition because it’s with real families who are basically using these day by day and ensuring that all systems are working and that we can take the knowledge that we gain there into applying into other environments. There have been several findings. For example in the area of smart metering, we’ve been into the topic of data privacy and data security quite a lot.
