US gunman finds time to update Facebook during hostage standoff
Jason Valdez, 36, held a woman hostage at the Western Colony Inn motel with police camped outside, but this did not stop him from posting six Facebook updates, which got dozens of comments from his family and friends – some supporting him and others pleading with him to do the right thing.
One friend messaged to tell Valdez that there were police officers hiding in the bushes, to which Valdez replied “Thank you homie, good looking out.”
The stand-off occurred when police tried to arrest Valdez after he failed to appear at a hearing for a drug possession charge.
The first message sent by Valdez read “I'm currently in a standoff ... kinda ugly, but ready for whatever. I love u guyz and if I don't make it out of here alive that I'm in a better place and u were all great friends.”
Police stormed the room ninety minutes after Valdez’s last post, which said that he was letting his hostage go and shot at the police when they tried to get in the room on her leaving.
Police are now debating if friends should be arrested and charged with obstruction of justice for hampering a police investigation.
