The History Of The Garage

In the early 20th Century garages were large structures used to house many cars all at once. They were generally owned by the wealthy and rich who would use their own privately owned garages to store other people's cars for a fee. As the industrial economy expanded so did the ownership of early cars and people began to build into their houses adjuncts or annexes where they could store their cars and use garages to store goods.

To begin with garages were built like stables, with traditional iron hinges and large oak panels. But as garage doors were required to be more compact these became the automated, sliding garage doors that we see today. Developed by C. D Johnson after years of trial and error, this electronic mechanism revolutionised the garage door and as people came around to the idea of the door away within the roof of the garage, consequently this idea spread around the world became the modern garage that we see today.

These garage doors became popular during the Second World War, with the dawn of the electric keyboard pad. These worked by way of a simple transmitter that would submit a signal to the receiver. However these first originators of the garage door worked on the same frequency so if you would try to open your own door, you would also open your neighbour's garage door! To halt this problem microcodes were introduced by way of the keyboard pad, however this was open to code grabbers which could extract the frequency codes and use these for nefarious purposes. This was eventually solved with cryptography which utilised rolling code technology.

Garage doors are one of the largest moving, rotating objects in the home. They can create strong forces with their counterbalancing springs which should be handled safely and with care. Installation and careful maintenance are important if you wish to prolong the life of a garage door. Header brackets, which attach the door to the wall of the garage, must be securely fixed or they can pull away with the motion of the door, potentially causing injuries.

Should you choose a garage one of the first things to consider is the purposes of the concrete garage? There are over 150 types of concrete garages each suited to a different purpose. There are prefabricated garages, reinforced garages, concrete sealed garages to name but a few.
