BW3's owner sells local Golden Corral in less than a year

LANCASTER -- A North Memorial Drive restaurant has new owners less than a year after it opened its doors.

Golden Corral Buffet & Grill, 2300 N. Memorial Drive, was sold to Platinum Corral, a franchise operator working in six states, by local restaurateur Larry Tipton.

"We opened with extremely strong sales," said Tipton, who also owns Buffalo Wild Wings, 1283 N. Memorial Drive in Lancaster. "We settled into what we would consider an acceptable range once the honeymoon wore off."

Jacksonsville, N.C.-based Platinum Corral contacted Tipton when the restaurant first opened in August about possibly buying the franchise, and the two stayed in contact the past 10 months, he said.

Platinum Corral owns 30 Golden Corral franchises, including locations in Chillicothe and Zanesville, according to its website.

Tipton said he sold the Golden Corral to focus on his work with his seven Buffalo Wild Wings franchises.

"After a lot of debate and negotiating and what have you, I decided it was best for us as a Buffalo Wild Wings operator," he said.

Renovations are scheduled this summer for Tipton's Buffalo Wild Wings franchise in Heath, and he plans to break ground on another franchise in Pickerington next week.

The Pickerington Buffalo Wild Wings, a 7,000-square-foot structure that will cost about $3.4 million, will be located at the intersection of Ohio 256 and Interstate 70. That location is expected to open in late October or early November, Tipton said.

In Heath, Tipton said he will shut down his Buffalo Wild Wings franchise for up to two weeks to complete about $450,000 in renovations, which includes a 45-seat outdoor patio that will re-open before the start of football season.

"The restaurant has been there for 16 years. We've owned it for six of those 16," he said. "It's in need of a face-lift."

The franchise also will add new high-definition televisions, new carpet, bar counters and interior furniture, among other changes, Tipton said.
